this is horrible, I just wrote this long e-mail in response to Shirley and
poof, pushed the wrong button and it was gone. Those dang buttons.
Shirley, would you share the info on the union book with all of us. I am
interested. My folks were union textile workers in the late '50's who were
blackballed throughout the southeast. As a result we moved to northwest
Illinois in 1960 where my Dad is a retired steelworker. I am a steward for
AFSME which represents fed, state and muni employees. Folks look at me funny
when they hear I am union, noone expects social workers to be so. But how
else does one deal with an employer who is a bureaucracy like the state of
Illinois.
Also, does anyone have a good source about the founding of the Southern
Baptist Church. My ancestors were around for that and planted churches all
over the south. My parents helped plant one in northwester Ill. Those
ancestors were also around for the founding of the Democratic Party. Did
not think of them and my parents as activists until my 17 yr old was
studying all of this last year in Am Hist. Had just thought of my older
mentors who were involved in Civil Rights and Women's movements as being
activists. Never really thought of myself as such, cause I am not as much
on the front line, but apparently my kids do, because they described me as
both social and political activist. Maybe I am in my own way carrying forth
the family tradition. I just see myself as doing what needs to be done, and
I know that is how my mamma saw herself in the late '50s trying to raise my
sister and I on nothing. Hey they felt like they were in great guns when
they came north and so had my brother.
Also, like most of you, I feel a strong kinship and sense of peace
about the time I hit that area where GA, TN and Carolinas come together.
The first time I really noticed it made me stop short and really explore the
feeling. I noticed myself just smiling for no reason and there is something
close to magic about that. Lou Cook
