Thanks to suggestions I've been able to search wider and it's been an
interesting run. I didn't realize there were so many sites and
organizations dedicated to all the various aspects of cemetery 'art'. It
turns out that there were not only "pattern books" but 'also catalogs.
There were even catalogs for monuments from sources such as Sears and
Montgomery Ward'.
So step one proves they exist, now to find where copies might be. What I'm
trying to find is a pattern for a particular style of headstone so that a
judgement can be made about how much of a broken stone is missing (and
whether there was room for a particular inscription on the missing portion).
