Jeanette, I was thinking of something that would refer to the complete
design of the stone, but what you're suggesting makes more sense. More
likely that there were patterns for the particular design features.

Amerian heraldry was established quite early but as you say without
bothering to get the arms officially registered back in England. In fact I
don't think even now you have to get approval for any coat of arms before
adopting and using it (though obviously images used already may be copyright
protected).

There is some prestige though to having an ancestor who adopted a coat of
arms in the US early on (in heraldric circles at least). You could have
your ancestor's arms added to the a Roll of Early American Arms that is
maintained by the American Heraldry Society if not already included there.

Larry,

There had to be coat of arms patterns as many cemeteries in South Carolina
and North Carolina contain those for the late 1700s and early 1800s. One of
my ancestors had a unique coat of arms that I can only theorize he created
when he came ot the New World. He came ca. 1761 with the thousands and
thousands of Scotch Irish that came over. I notice that many of his
neighbors in the cemetery had coats of arms that were well-known in Great
Britain although the coats of arms used in the United States cemeteries
didn't match the surnames for those used in Europe. I've "theorized" that
the new immigrants had nothing to fear from the British government and
decided to create their own coats of arms or whatever that made them feel
important in the new world.

I posted a message early this morning wondering if anyone knew if memorial
stone carvers in the 19th century would have had access to pattern books
similar to those that were popular in the period for architecture and other
things. I won't repeat the whole email because it will probably arrive at
the list in its own good time.

can't bring up any references in my searches, maybe phrasing the search
wrongly

Larry
