Dear Rondina et al,

Elizabeth, Elissa, and Drew have all explained the syllabus printing
situation and how contract speakers view the printing of the syllabus very
well.

The syllabus is sent to print long before the closing date on conference
registrations. Therefore people can continue to register for the PMC (and
the FGS conference) after the printing of the syllabus has begun. In
addition, as Elizabeth has explained, printers traditionally (according to
their printing agreement) can do an overage/underage up to a certain
percentage. When the decision is made determining how many syllabi should
be printed, both of these issues are taken into consideration. As a result
it is common practice (at least for the PMC) to estimate high - rather than
to estimate low - the number of syllabi that we will print for any specific
year. We do not like to turn away any late registrants or even walk-ups to
the conference if at all possible and like to be able to offer people a
syllabus even if they register at the last minute. We also like to have a
few additional copies should an attendee have an accident (i.e. such as
coffee being spilled on their original syllabus) and therefore require a
replacement. As a result when all is said and done we do usually have some
syllabi left over which we then in return sell. We believe it is better to
have some left over (i.e. extras) in order to insure that each conference
attendee receives a copy.

The copyright of the information in the syllabus is each speaker's alone.
The PMC does not hold the copyright on most of the information contained
within the syllabus. Therefore the ability to print syllabi copies with the
shear intent of selling them for profit does not exist.

APG membership dues DO NOT go towards supporting the PMC. The PMC is
self-sufficient in and of itself. The costs of the conference (A/V,
speaker's fees, printing, meals, etc.) are paid for by the conference income
(registration, advertisements/sponsorships, and sales of any left-over
syllabi).

Warm Regards,

Allison

Drew,

There is a difference. I would still like to hear from Allison as to why
things are as they are. The position you take is valid, but I feel it is
also too widely focused and firmly stuck, er, rooted in the 20th century. I
am not speaking of syllabi in the abstract---only that of the APG PMC. Let
me raise another point. Are any part of my membership dues going towards the
PMC? Allison?
