I've got a problem that involves two partial headstones that appear to be
identical in design ( or appear to be from the surviving pieces. One is
more complete than the other). They are in completely different cemeteries
separated by many miles. I won't go into the details of the problem except
to say that it involves whether or not there was room for additional carved
information on one of them (room for a particular phrase).

What struck me about these two stones is that the design is identical,
though rare. Exactly identical. It's possible that the same carver may
have created both stones, but there are geographic factors that make that
less likely.

Where there pattern books for memorials and funerary decoration in the same
way there were contemporary pattern books available for many other things
(architectural designs for example)? Period is mid to late 19th century.
