I like Michael's vote of confidence about extra syllabuses being available
after the conference.
APG should not be blamed for not providing copyrighted material beyond the
first print run that covers the attendees Speaker contracts with sponsoring
organizations often confer one-time copy rights for distribution to
attendees only. The syllabus material is meant to enhance the experience of
lecture attendees so that they don't have to copy notes and have URLs
already listed. Depending on the speaker, the syllabus may be of little
value unless you were there or it may be very informative. But you don't
know that until you get the syllabus in hand.
It is true that one of the best educational experiences is when a lecture
tape is paired with syllabus material. The only things missing is the
visuals (which for some lectures can make all the difference) and the
interaction with the speaker. However I can't remember when the last time an
APG PMC was taped. (Perhaps a PMC spokesperson can say when.) Therefore, the
PMC cannot be treated the same as a national conference which does do
taping. Even the national conference sponsors don't produce more syllabuses
than they need. For example, FGS Little Rock attendees can only get a
printed syllabus if they order one by this Saturday.
It would seem that APG is constrained by contract and the speaker's
copyright to not create more syllabuses than it thinks it needs for the
attendees. It is not that they don't want people to take advantage of the
learning opportunity. The committee has done a wonderful job in putting this
together and making it possible. I remember a time when we did not have a
PMC. It is certainly a wonderful opportunity that is offered in various
geographic places (where the FGS conferences are).
See you in Little Rock,
