Was Sarah/Susan by chance Jewish? It was common for immigrant Jews to change
their Hebrew or Yiddish names to something more "American". Sarah, as a
Biblical name, is a very common Jewish name (with many variants). Depending
on the year she married it may have been "in" to be a Susan in her group.
Does anyone on this list remember Susan Haywood and other actresses with
names young adults wished they had?

I had a client with four sisters born in Brooklyn with "Jewish" first names
and middle names, over the years they changed their first names a few times;
one sister eventually being known by five different first names and two
lingering nicknames.
