Dear Joan,

Let me clarify my statement - what I meant was that they were discoverable/searchable by any member of the public in an Internet search - I did NOT mean that they were in the public domain in a copyright or ownership sense. 

I will try to be more clear and precise in the future.

Posts to RootsWeb lists are only "public" in the sense that anyone can view them in the list archives or on the list via email if they are a list subscriber. Otherwise, the individual posts are copyrighted to the poster/author and the collective list archives are the property of RootsWeb/TGN--and not to be copied. Many years ago some will remember a legal issue that was pursued and RootsWeb won--offsite archiving of list posts is NOT permitted unless these are posts you yourself made or you have permission of the poster to do so.
