Subject: [APG] Locating a Will
I am writing from Canada. One of my clients is trying to track down the will
of her great uncle. The reason for this is in the hopes of finding out the
names of cousins she may have. What I know is that William Hugh Powell was
born in Queens, New York on March 21, 1921. Through the SSDI I found that he
died on July 31, 2002 and that his last known address was Glen Oaks, Queens,
I initially contacted the Queens Library and had them perform an obituary
search. I dont know what papers are published in this area but their
response was that they searched the Queens edition of Newsday and could not
locate an obituary. My next step was to contact the Queens County
Surrogates Court with a request to search for a copy of the will or for the
Letters of Administration. This morning I received their reply stating that
following their search no records were found. I was very disappointed as I
understood that even if an individual died intestate there would at least be
the letters of administration.
I am looking for some advice from the list as to where I might go next.
Would it be beneficial to order an actual copy of the Social Security Record
(and are there any restrictions in ordering it).
My client desperately wants to find and make contact with any living
relatives she might have through this gentleman. I have spent a fair bit of
time and money, to date, on this search and keep coming up empty. Any
suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
