Was O. H. Perry named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry? (Wikipedia:
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (August 23, 1785 - August 23, 1819) was an
officer in the United States Navy. He served in the War of 1812 against
Britain and earned the nickname "Hero of Lake Erie" for leading American
forces in a decisive naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie.)
What was the connection that caused Oliver H. Perry's parents to name him
that? Was his father in the War of 1812 with Perry? Was he a descendant or
other relative? Or did they just admire the "Hero of Lake Erie" (and
happened to have the same surname)? It sure would set my curiosity button
on. Someone with such an illustrious name might not want to change it -- on
the other hand it is a perfectly good reason TO change it. <g>
