I'm glad Richard asked the questions below, as I would be hesitant to
form an opinion, or advocate for a specific outcome, without having a
clear idea of specifics rather than hypotheticals. It seems like
Melinde is trying to sketch out the situation without betraying
people's identities -- and I totally understand that wish if that is
what she is doing -- but I worry that people are starting to form
opinions without a full understanding of exactly what the circumstances
were.

Is there a way -- since the cat is at least half out of the bag now --
of citing the exact situations of concern (with or without names
attached -- whatever is possible), so they can be addressed fully and
accurately, in order to make sure the EC and any other people involved
in any potential problem are dealt with fully but fairly? I absolutely
agree that members should speak up about problems, but it will help
enormously to know exactly what happened so we keep the rumor mill down
to a dull roar<g>.

Imagine if a client said, "What if my great-grandmother was in East
Podunk in the 1910 census? How would you proceed with research?" My
reply would be, "Well -- was she?"

Best,
Linda Courtemanche.

....1. Did the Executive Committee accuse, try, convict, and suspended
a member
"in absentia behind closed doors"? Yes or no.

2, Did the Executive Committee take an email sent to this list and
censor it
"so that it never appeared"? Yes or no.

3, Did the Executive Committee kill an article by a "well respected
author"
just before publication in the APGQ because it "didn't like it"? Yes or
No.

4. Did the Executive Committee pull "a nationally known speaker" out of
a
banquet talk "after the publicity and syllabus was out" because
something he
or she "was expected to say was 'unapproved' by the Executive
Committee"?
Yes or no.

Did any of these things actually happen?>>
