A footnote to what Chuck wrote below: Service records often were registered
locally, both as a means of preventing loss of service papers and,
sometimes, as a means of obtaining state bonuses that were paid. I know this
was done after World War II and the Korean War and I believe it began as far
back as the Civil War (I haven't located it yet, but a cousin of mine claims
to have seen the record of our mural great grandfather at the local court
house. My own papers were file in my home county in order to receive a state
bonus of $640 - when that was enough to get you through college! - after the
Korean War.
