Finding Mariners, Seafaring Ancestors, Ships and Maritime News
Jonathan Galli presents this case study as just one example of how to
document elusive ancestors for whom the traditional sources are sparse
or non-existent.
Mariners are particularly problematic to track.
Jonathan had been able to find some vital record and probate
information for his O'Cain family that immigrated to Connecticut "from
the Irish nation" in the 18th century, but the original immigrant's
grandson was only found in the 1790 census and then seemed to disappear.
With the advent of the internet, Jonathan found other resources that
showed that Joseph became a sea captain and was instrumental in altering
the entire Pacific coast trade. Through newly digitized newspaper
resources, Jonathan was able to track this ancestor and discover many
details of this man's life.

The teleconference phone number is in Iowa, which may be a toll call
depending on your long distance phone plan.
The format is easy to follow. Each teleconference session begins with
the "housekeeping", then all registrants will be muted during the
presentation segments of the teleconference topic. After each segment, a
Q&A session will be opened up where everyone can ask questions and have
a conversation about their particular interests.
