Thanks Amy -
Before going to the home page, I went back to the ad and clicked off that. It took me to a sign-in screen which needed my e-mail, then I needed to click through a couple of screens, but it wouldn't let me click past the family tree screen. I needed to fill in 1 person on the tree and had the option to turn off sharing the tree. However if I turn off sharing I'm told: Even if you don't share your tree, other members can still learn if a specific deceased individual is in your tree, in addition to the birth year and birthplace of the person and your username. They can then contact you anonymously through Ancestry's Connection Service. So, I'm not sure what I am turning off. There's always a catch - isn't there. Well, I'd better get going as I've already lost 1/2 a day. Thanks.
Ruth

...When I went to Ancestry's home page, there was an ad on the screen on
the right hand side that said Click here to start for the full access
for 3 days. It asked for your email address and then stepped through 4
items to create a family tree (which I set to private) and then gave me
full access. I only have the US subscription and I went into the
Scotland census to make sure that I could get to it and it let me.
