opinions of ancestry.com

I hate to ask this question, but I am toying with the idea of subscribing to
ancestry.com. This is against my personal opinion of them, use of data,
etc. BUT...I suppose it is a necessary evil in these days, especially as a
professional.
I would be interested to know your thoughts on this company, other companies
of the same ilk, treatment by staff, horror stories, good stories, quality
of data, etc.
I live in a rural area that does not offer library subscriptions to sites
like this. (That, however, is something I wish to take up with the library
people once I know what is available out there.)
While this is a small county (population 12,000) that is only the official
county. The tax base is enormously wealthy because of waterfront homes that
are not primary residences.
