I thought somebody else would have mentioned this term, "Grass Widow" by
now. That is what I always heard them referred. Either abandoned, divorced
or never even really married. My great-grandmother was one. I don't know
if she ever got a divorce or not (St. Louis County, MO. Circuit Court told
me they have no access to any old records--a bunch of hooey but I didn't
feel like arguing with them at the time).

There is church minute note for whom I assume to be her at tiny Mizpah
Presbyterian Church in what was then the village of Pattonville, that reads
(more or less). "Mrs. B------ came forth and said she no longer believed in
God and did not wish to play a hypocrit." and resigned her church
membership.
