I have found several listings of single mothers who NEVER married the father
of their child/ren, yet listed on the census as a "widow".

Subject: Widow on Census
I have encountered the term "widow" shown on census 1900-1920 when the
couple were "somewhat" separated. In other words, the husband just took off
and left her. There is nothing in that column that could be marked
"deserted." It was either single, married, divorced or widowed. I have
also seen the same with some female subjects on census 1870 to 1900. As for
geographic location, these were in various states and not one specific
location.
