Yes--I've done all this years ago but the only place I find reference to the
nicknames for the two Johns is in the private journal of my cousin's
great-grandmother. I do know where each man lived and know quite a bit about each
one--just not which nickname applies to which John. I have a hunch that my
ancestor was Hickory John just based where he lived and my "guess" that his
location would have been more likely to have had a large in front (but that was
150 years ago) so it is hard to know for sure. I've not found anything that
would prove conclusively which one was which.
It is really not that important -- it is just amusing to me that two people
who gave me fits trying to sort them out well over 125 years after their
deaths also caused confusion for their friends and family when they were living.
