With all respect <G> you might try for another explanation of NSW. In 1860
(your census reference for this odd birthplace) the only things just south
of Hudson's Bay were natives and Hudson's Bay forts. There were no forts
called New South Wales, or North Wales for that matter. There is a current
geographic feature called Wales Point which seems to coincide with what was
Fort Churchill. York Factory and Flamborough House are other HBC historical
names along the southwest portion of Hudson's Bay. If a man in Michigan in
1860 had been born "way up there" surely he would have named the fort as his
birthplace. Or Canada. However most residents of the forts were likely
born/recruited in Scotland or England to work there. Very odd.

But very enlightening discussion!
