If you're looking for a clear and consise source on genealogical
numbering systems, I strongly recommend "Numbering Your Genealogy," by
Joan Ferris Curran, Madilyn Coen Crane, and Joyn H. Wray, National
Genealogical Society, Special Publication No. 64. I'm sure it's
available from the NGS web site. It's a 36-page pamphlet and probably
only costs a few dollars.
