Nancy,
Following is the introduction to the name index in my Steele family
history. I believe this follows recommended standards:
Married women are indexed by both their maiden name and their married
name. Maiden names are enclosed in parentheses and married names in
square brackets. If a woman's maiden name is unknown, she will only be
indexed under her married name. For example, Elizabeth [-?-], wife of
Richard Steele, will be indexed only as
Steele, Elizabeth ( )
Women married more than once are indexed under each married name. Mercy
Warner, who was first married to John Steele, Jr., and later to William
Hills, has the following three entries:
Warner, Mercy [Steele, Hills]
Steele, Mercy (Warner)
Hills, Mercy (Warner)
Ted Steele
St. Louis, Mo.
