Good morning,

My gr gr grandmother, Apollonia Hoock Steppig (Stoeppig/ Stoppig), is one of my brick walls. The 1880 Federal Census has her from Alsace (spelled Elsa). Does anyone on this list know if Hoock is an Alsace surname or if this could be a derivation of another Alsace surname that became Americanized? I do not have access to her date of birth (I am in San Diego on business and do not have my personal computer) but I seem to remember she was born abt 1832. Michael Steppig, her husband, is from Alsace and he was born abt the same time. A fellow list member is a distant cousin of mine and he shared his Steppig ancestral file with me and I am very grateful for his kindness. Anyway, I can not find an immigration record for Apollonia and am wondering if Hoock is the correct spelling. Any help you and give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and blessings,
Mary from Arkansas, USA
