Subject: [ALMARION] LAST CALL

I want to personally apologize to SCOTT and SUZI, the only ones offended
by my calling the new people "NEWBIES", and will ask all others now to
back off, lets all get back to genealogy! And smile!

I will explain that I didn't get a computer or internet until I was 70
years old, and I had no one to teach me nor help me when I couldn't
figure it out....and perhaps that is the reason to this day, that I feel
compelled to help others in the same situation. I was, indeed, very
fortunate that the first thing I found was a genealogyforum Chat line on
IRC, as I was still putting "genealogy" into the search lines. The
people in this room taught me everything I know about the computer as
well as genealogy. Through them, I learned how to get on lists.
I was given genealogy URLs. In the ensuing three years, I have had the
good luck to have three different gentlemen write me nice notes, that
they felt I was a serious researcher and they liked the way I work, and
send me the complete history on three of my lines. That doesn't stop
there. There are always still blanks to fill and another notch back.
Every little bit of information helps....and I have learned to see clues
in surrounding names on census records...and I have found families by
lumping the places of birth of the individual, his father and
mother...but the thing that I have found MOST helpful, are the LISTS,
and I have also found that by repeating over and over, the NAME-DATE-and
PLACE that it finally registers with someone and I do get a reply. Too
many "new" researchers will just ask for the name. We learn a lot later
that there are thousands with the same name, and time is so relevant ,
if you have names such as I do...CUSTER-YOUNG-McDONALD-SMITH (try that
one), McMILLAN, INCE, TOMPKINS, KEOWN, McCOY, RANKIN, and WHITE (try
browsing on White..you get White paper, white roses, white everything
except what you want.) By going into a White list it eliminated a
hopeless situation. But to have an active, helpful list, everyone MUST
contribute, not only with their surnames, etc but with other information
they may have found that doesn't help them, but just may be what the
other fellow needs.

Onto bigger and better things! God Bless! Jean McCoy
