I have been in the photography and picture framing business for 25 years.
It is not unusual today, for a family to come to the studio to have the
family portrait made and want to hold a picture of a deceased child, sibling
or spouse. Only one time was the request to include a picture of a deceased
parent, and that customer wanted a Five Generation portrait. I have been to
the funeral home and done a family portrait of the family standing at the
head of the casket with Grandmother .!! "Talk about waiting until the last
minute"!!
I doubt your picture was used as a simple prop. Now days we simply
superimpose the image into the photograph, however that technique did not
exist in the 1800's on a large scale.
