His birth was recorded as Charles-Scott-Allan and the other births on this page were recoded the same way ie. with a hyphen between each name. This was carried over to his marriage certificate and has caused much discussion in the family since. One son and at least one daughter were given the name Scott but the other five children were not. As a result we have one lot of cousins with the name Scott-Allan and one lot Allan. It may be that as the marriage and the birth of the first 2 children was in South Africa and the others in NZ things were recoded differently. I wonder if others who have had births registered in Peterhead at this time have used hyphenated names as a result of the way the event was recorded?

I haven't anybody registered in Peterhead, but I have come across
similar unusual use of hyphens in registration of births in the parish
of Monquhitter. Children of my great-grandfather registered in that
parish to his first wife included "David-Mitchell Angus" and
"William-Mitchell Angus", followed by "Ann-Lawrence Angus", born to his
second wife. "Angus" was my ggf's surname, "Mitchell" was the maiden
name of his first wife, but interestingly, "Lawrence" was his own
mother's surname.

None of these hyphenated "middle names"occur with other children of this
family (there were 14 of them in total) born in other parishes, nor have
I come across any instances of these three individuals being recorded,
in Census or any other records, other than as "David Angus", "William
Angus" and "Ann Angus". I am therefore inclined to think that this was
a peculiarity of the Registrar, and did not reflect anything about the
names as the family understood them. It may be that your family were
similarly misrepresented by the Peterhead Registrar.
