All that I would add to that is:
(1) to this day some parishes contain nothing you could call a village,
being completely rural
(2) it is a good idea to get hold of a map which shows the parish
boundaries. By this I mean a historical map on paper - none of the
standard online maps show these boundaries. You can buy a very useful
series of reprints of late-19th century Ordnance Survey maps from:
