One further point about FreeCEN is that
Forename searching uses automatic truncation
[so "Ann" alsos find "Anne", "Annie" etc]
whereas the Surname doesn't assume truncation
[so "John" will not find "Johnson"].
For the surname you have to use the terminal asterisk
["John*" finds "Johnson"].
To find spelling variants of the surname, tick the box
marked "Phonetic search on Surname".
E.g. Our Alexander SHIRRAN appeared to be missing.
A SHIRRAN didn't find him but the phonetic search on it
found Alexander SHERRAN, plus wife Ann & daughter Ann.
The thing is to keep trying different routes. If you
happen to know the Occupation, as Janet did, this can
be a great help for focussing the search results.
FreeCEN used to limit the search time for a vague query
but they doubled the number of search engines about
two years ago so this doesn't happen so often now.
