Have you physically seen the census image or are you taking the information from an index. It is far far more common for the index to have misread the writing than it is for the original to be wrong. Gavin may well be correct and you would be wise to follow his cautious approach and unless you can prove its the right William you should assume that its not.

William Bain of Kincardineshire was listed as being 40 years of age on the 1871 census.
However, the IGI shows him being born in 1825 to John Bain and Jean Marr in Kinellar, Aberdeenshire. His wedding in 1859 confirms his birthplace and parents - but it caught me offguard that the 1871 census would have his age off by six years!! 2, maybe 3 OK - but 6?
Either the first William died and maybe he's the second William Bain born but was unrecorded? Or is it just a case of him lying about his age?
Suggestions anyone?
