Subject: [ABERDEEN] 1861 census for STEWART/STUART
Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 12:03:46 +1000

Hello listers

I am after a favour if possible please for a look-up on Ancestry on the 1861 census for Alexander/Alex STEWART/STUART b Nov 1840 Turriff, Aberdeen although on the 1841 census as a 6mth old he and his mother, Jean, shown as Paterson although she was married, are in Blackhills, Banffshire. I presume William Stewart her husband is working as a farm labourer. I have found one William Stewart at Inveravon but not sure whether this is my William Stewart.

On the 1851 census Alexander is an 11 yr old scholar visiting with his mother, his mother's half sister, in Old Deer, his father is shown as a farm labourer here.

Alexander emigrated to Victoria, Australia about 1870 where he was shown as a farmer but by 1880 he was a telegraph line repairer in NSW, Australia with appointments made for this position from the Glasgow Office. He continued this profession in country NSW until he retired in 1905.

I have not been able to find Alexander in the Glasgow area on FreeCen site and would be most grateful if anyone can find my great grandfather on the 1861 census, hopefully in Glasgow.

I have been in touch with the archives in London who hold the records for Glasgow and have received a reply today that as I know the date of his appointment this is the only record they would hold.

Kind regards
Joan in Oz
