There is an Angus McBain on the 1871 census, Old Machar. Age 40, operative spinning factory given as occupation, married with children. Could this be him?

yup - that is them.
Angus is the only one i cannot find after that 1841 census - he's MIA, as it were, and I am hoping that the researchers at ANESFHS will locate him, perhaps in a grave somewhere in aberdeen... or maybe he booted it to England, though I have only one possible candidate thus far, and he's a gardener in 1861...hardly likely for my flax spinning teen!
Everyone else I have been able to locate, though John the eldest son takes off to Nova Scotia sometime between 1843 and 1846 with his own wife Ann, son Thomas, and daughter Christina - or maybe not, since I cannot locate Thomas or Christina in Canada.
The problem with the 1851 census is it lists only the head of the house by name, and everyone else is lumped together.

Well, John mcBain is on the 1841 census, along with his dad and mom, and a couple of brothers, you have to punch in his birthdate as 1820 and he pops up on Ancestry. He was an Aberdeenian, alright, and is living on Spa Street as a Student, which means he must have graduated from high school and was involved in some kind of graduate studies, perhaps with a church or something...
I will look up ONtario Vital Statistics asap!
