I think what is trying to be said is that using other clues, you can get a
rough estimate of when the person might have traveled and what the ports of
departure and arrival were, the ship, etc.
For example I found my ancestor...I did not know exactly that year he
sailed, or what ports he departed or arrived in. It was not easy but using
other family information (e.g. army papers showing when he left service in
South Africa and returned to Scotland, marriage records some 8 years later,
census records or lack of his name, etc., etc. I began to believe that he
must have sailed in late 1903 or 1904 from Scotland to Canada. I then found
out that Canada was promoting the new country and many traveled to Halifax
or Montreal on all-in one ship and train tickets...then I assumed that if he
was homesteading he would not come in winter...etc, etc. It took me a day
and a half of looking (or squinting more likely) at microfilms (now on line
think goodness) but I found him! It "ain't" easy, but it is possible.

I don't "get it" either........First off I know who my folks traveled with,
but all the ships records I can find ask the name of the ship. Now IF I
knew that, I'd be ahead of this little game..How would I know which port
they sailed from?...They are on the 1851 census in Scotland, and the 1861
census in Canada. I'm surmissing 1854 from other family members. The
address Rick sent is Ancestory again, and here goes more money...sorry to
sound a bit cross, but it pains me when others can find this info and I
can't so I sulk!! LOL Goldie
