I am researching my husband's great-grandfather WILLIAM MITCHELL, christened 6 March 1823 in Aboyne, Aberdeen, Scotland, died January 6, 1879 in Ayton, Grey County, Ontario, Canada.
His parents were JOHN MITCHELL and MARY BIRSE MITCHELL, married 12 March 1816 in Aboyne. They had five children: John, b. 1816; Anne, b. 1818; Mary b. 1820; William, b. 1823; and Alexander, b. 1825. All were christened in Aboyne but the baptism records state the family lived at "Newton of Bottemend" which I have determined was a farm located several miles east of Aboyne.
I have located 1841 census records which show William (hopefully mine), aged 19, working as an agricultural labourer in the Civil Parish of Aboyne and Glentannar at Abomine Battnagrova. I cannot locate this place on any maps or find any information on such a place. Would anyone know if this was a town, village, farm?
I have no further information on any of the family except William who emigrated to Canada in the 1850's and would like to learn more about other family members and their descendants. I also have several questions - is there a cemetery located in Aboyne and if so how might I access records? Is anyone connected to the Mitchell family or have any information regarding them? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information regarding the Mitchell family.
