I suspect that James's fathers surname was DALGARNO and that whilst it
wasn't used on the birth certificate (father must be present at registration
if parents not married I believe) James has adopted it as an adult and his
marriage certificate is accurate. The use of DALGARNO as a surname for
Margaret may have been an assumption by the minister or even to hide the
fact James was illigitimate.

Adopting a reputed fathers surname was not uncommon, if you look at
Margaret's son George on the 1901 census he is called George GRANT, I'm
guessing GRANT was his fathers surname.

Also, if you go back to the eldest child of Helen WILL, on the 1851 census
he is George SUTHERLAND age2, with Helen and her parents, in 1861 he is
George GARDEN, living with Helen and her husband John GARDEN, but in 1871
and subsequence censuses he is George SUTHERLAND.

I'm not sure whether you have it or not but it looks like Margaret died in
Peterhead in 1935 aged 74
