Childhood was not quite what it is today, back then! Thanks all for an
informative discussion.

"Children under 16, and paupers, were exempt from the tax."
Don
I have a copy of the book for Fyvie and boys aged 14, 13 and even as young
as 7 are all paying their own tax, so it would appear that the introductory
remarks at the beginning of the book are incorrect with regards to the age
of persons expected to pay the poll tax.
Extract from page 278; (All employed at Maynes of Fyvie)
Alexander Cruickshank, herd, fourteen years of age, fee £4 per annum,
fortieth pairt and generall poll.........£0. 8. 0
James Sinclair, herd, fourteen years of age, his fee £4 per annum, fortieth
part and generall poll........£0. 8. 0
George Hepburn, herd, thirteen years of age, fee £4 per annum, fortieth part
and generall poll.........£0. 8. 0
Peter Forsyth, herd, seven years of age, fee 3 merks per annum, fortieth
part and generall poll.........£0. 7. 0
(spelling as per book)
