Les and Tom have posted the essential information. But as most of the
information of interest to genealogists is filed in terms of the former
(pre-1974) counties and parishes, I would suggest that getting hold of
some maps showing the boundaries of these would be a good idea. Modern
maps do not show these boundaries, but Caledonian Maps
(http://caledonianmaps.co.uk/acatalog/) publish reproductions of
Victorian Ordnance Survey Maps which show these boundaries. These are
available to purchase online.
