A lair is where an animal habitually lies down. If you sink in the mud (or
in the vernacular 'the clarts') then your are laired. A lair is a burial
plot (easy to see where that came from) and it usually refers to just one
hole in the ground but my McBains in Rathven cemetery are all together but
have three lair numbers (no markers) and therefore we have to presume that
they are in three separate graves.
