Lin,

I also have the same situation. I also have found that this can be from any
time after the birth. The Sheriff Court issued a Correction to the Register
of Births after establishing the parentage of the child. I went to the SRO
for further details of the court action and was lucky to find more. You will
have to go the Repository for the area and read the exact wording of the
Correction as this is not given out by the registrar. If you ask for a
certificate, they will add the father to the certificate but will not give
any reason to the change. It may be that you have the original birth
certificate and it does not show the father but any requested after the
Sheriff's Decree will show the father.

I have in my great grandmother, Elizabeth Taylor (and her 6 sisters) line,
17 illegitimate children of which half have a Sheriff' Decree and Correction
to the Registered Entry (CRE). All repositories have a one or more CRE entry
book for all the parishes and will contain other information on any registry
entry i.e. cause of death (if not known when the death certificate was
issued).

There was not mention of any financial help in the Sheriff's Decree either
in the CRE or at the SRO.

Regards,
Sandy

Subject: [ABERDEEN] help please

My grandfather James Urquhart was born in St Fergus July 1889 listed on his
birth cert. as illegitimate mother Jane Urquhart. Having found the entry for
his birth on scotgro web site I found there had been amendment made to it.
Thanks to Margaret I now have the details of the amendment:
This says that as a result of an action brought by Jane Mess Urquhart,
Domestic Servant,Happyhillock,Rathen,against John Ferguson,Farm
servant,Towie,by
Aberdeen, the Sheriff Court decided that Jane Urquhart and John Ferguson were
the child's parents. 19 August 1895.

Puzzled and intrigued I am. Can you help
Bearing in mind James was born in July 1889 and the court date is 1895. Can
anyone please tell me how these issues were heard and proved, at what cost,
and if John Ferguson would have been made to pay some kind of financial
support to Jane to support James. Also any reasons why it took from James
birth in 1889 to 1895 for it to be settled.
Would Jane also have been entitled to poor relief if she was not able to
work and if so where would I find records of this.
Look forward to hearing from you
Thanks
LIN
