Hi Laura, me again, I also checked the 1881 census, a
Penny(grandaughter) listed along with the Trail family including the
widow Susan. See below:

Susan Dunn would have been born approx. 1821-23 in Rathen. You can find
this on the IGI as well.
She may not have disappeared after all, she may have been under your
nose all this time!
