Thank you Ian for this suggestion, however it appears from William's
birth certificate that his parents were not married at the time of his
birth. The father is listed, but William was given his mother's
surname, so I guess the father was not well thought of by the mother or
perhaps he was already married to someone else?

Interestingly William, my grandfather, was born on 23rd September 1900.
Notice the date?! 9 months after Christmas and New Year. I wonder if
there might have been some big celebrations for New Year's Eve 1899,
just as there was for us in 1999. William's mother Mary was a
domestic servant and his father James Birnie was a carter. I am not
sure where she worked but in Cruden Bay at that time was Slains Castle
and a very grand Railway Hotel. Don't we all wish the TARDIS really
worked. :>)
