This was described in some detail on this list around 17th February, so
is presumably in the archives.
Without analysing the names of all families for all generations, it's
impossible to say how widely the pattern was followed. None of the
branches of my family appear to have adhered to it, and I would be very
chary of putting too much trust in any such pattern. If you have no
other lines of enquiry to follow, then you have nothing to lose by
looking for ancestors in line with the naming pattern, and you might get
lucky.
Equally, there are other patterns of naming which may be useful. My
family seem to have gone in a lot for giving children middle names which
were the maiden name of the mother, or the family name of friends, or
the married name of sisters, and I have been able to establish ggguncles
and aunts by this means.
