Hi Lynn,
A sherriff in Scotland at that time would be a magistrate or judge.
Sir Walter Scott, who most of us recognise as an author in the early 18th
Century, was also a lawyer and sherriff in the Border country for about
thirty years. In view of this I think that the sherriff did not pound the
beat as a policeman, but was on the bench in a court of law. Hope this helps
your research.
Bye for now

Is it possible to verify if a John Shand was a sherriff in Aberdeenshire
around 1835-1840. Is a sherriff the same as a police officer?

Thank you,
Lynn Millar
