It appears that the body of the message I sent on 25 Oct did not come
when it was re-transmitted by rootsweb. I'll try 'one more time' -
West Bend, WI
The 1890 veterans census or survey was, by definition, a survey of Union
veterans (although a few Confederates slipped in due to confusion in
some locations). Therefore, your Richard Thompson was virtually certain
to be Union.
Also, following are unit listings from Bradley Co TN; & the Union 4th
Cavalry, Company E was a Bradley Co Union unit.
5TH-MCCLELLAN-CAV, CO A, BECAME A, 2ND ASHBY REG
1ST-ROGERS0 CAV, CO C, BECAME H, 63RD INF
1ST-ROGERS0 CAV CO I, BECAME D, 5TH CAV
29TH INF, CO A
36TH INF, CO B, C, D, E, F, AND G
37TH INF, CO G
43RD INF, CO I
62ND INF, CO A AND E
1ST CAV, CO F, I, K AND L
3RD CAV, CO G
4TH CAV, CO E
5TH CAV, CO A
10TH CAV, CO E AND I
5TH MI, CO A THROUGH K
5TH INF, CO G
If you go to this site -
under 'soldiers', you can search for names recorded in the the compiled
service records. I find the following in the Union 4th Cavalry, Company E:
Asbury C. Thompson
John H. Thompson
Timothy L. Thompson
The problem with searching this site is that it doesn't allow for
spelling variations; so if there is some slight mis-spelling, you don't
see it. You can see a regiment history & a complete name listing for the
Union 4th Cavalry regiment by going to the 'Regiments' sections at this
site; however, you can only see 20 names/page, starting with A, and
there are over 1900 names in the regiment. (You used to be able to
download a complete regiment listing in Excel format at this site, but
they've removed that feature.)
Easier yet, just go to this site which is dedicated to the Union 4th
As you may note, there is a 'Richard Thomas' listed in Company E,
although he was from McMinn Co.
Have you checked to see if your Richard received a pension?
Note that the discharge date of 7-24-1865 doesn't 'fit' the discharge
date of the regiment. Not a certain sign, but it is a clue that
something isn't fitting.
