Hi Delores:
I was wondering if you were aware that there were actually two 17th Texas Cavalrys? The original 17th was the one written about in McCaffrey's book.
Most of them were captured at Arkansas Post in Jan. 1863, held for a few months at Camp Douglas Ill. and then exchanged in Virginia and spent the rest of the war with the Army of Tennessee as the 17th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted). However, a few soldiers of the 17th escaped at Arkansas Post and were reorganized as the 17th Texas Consolidated Cavalry and fought west of the Mississippi. Your ancestor was among the latter as he is on the roster of both units. You can find information about the 17th and the 4th at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss.
Regards,
Charlie Temple

>My great-grandfather, James Harvey Haltom, served in the 17th. On September 21, 1864, as a Jr. 2nd Lieutenant, James wrote the following letter to Brigadier General W. R. Boggs, Chief of Staff:
>
>"Genl.--I herewith tender my Resignation as Jr 2d Lieut, Co A, 17th Consolidated Texas Cavy. (Distd), and respectfully request that I be ordered to report for duty to Capt. Wm L. Alexander, Co H, 4th Texas Cavy. Also that I may be granted a furlough of (30) thirty days, to go to my home in Nacogdoches Texas, for the purpose of procurring my horse. I respectfully urge that my resignation be accepted, for the reason that sickness has rendered me physically unable to perform my duties as an Infantry officer." (Thet Texan was tared of walkin' and wanted to git back on his hoss!!!)

>I have looked for information on the above Co. H, 4th Texas Cavalry, but have been unable to find anything about them. I'd like to know whether James Harvey Haltom ever reported for duty to that regiment, and where they may have fought.

>>I see that several people are interested in the roster for the 17th Texas Cavalry. I found a complete roster, listed in the book "THIS BAND OF HEROES" by: James A. McCaffrey. I was able to get this book from my local library who borrowed it from Tempelton University Lib. in Texas. The book has as complete a history of this unit as I have seen. If anyone has information or pictures of the 17th especially company G or information about Pvt. Richard H. Sanders or Pvt. Thomas J. Knight please correspond or post.
>> Thanks, Chuck Sanders Elko, NV.
