Subject: [1776] BATTLE NEAR BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA

24 February 1782
Colonel Robert Barnwell and his St. Helena Volunteer Militia
Company attempted to cross the Savannah River at Beaufort to burn the
British stores in Georgia. He was attacked by the Beaufort Loyalist
militia under the command of Major Andrew Deveaux and driven back across
the river. Barnwell lost six men killed and five captured.
