I don't know specifically, but from what general historical information I've
picked up along the way I believe it was started up pretty early on
(pre-Rev.War for sure*) because 1) Most people did not have extra beds so
they shared beds with visitors, etc. When it involved a fairly grown son or
daughter, they did the best they could under the circumsances by Bundling
them in a bag -- for chasity's sake. 2) Also in the old time days, people
traveled to each other's homes for weddings, funerals, celebrations and
regular visits. Because of the distance between farms or houses, they often
stayed for days. Again, people often had to share beds and again, the
Bundling Bags were made up and used. Sandy
* Don't know if it was the custom of Norway/Sweden/England/Ireland and the
like -- but it seems like it might've.
